INTENSIVE ENGLISH

OUR ESL PROGRAM

Our ESL Program
US Ling Institute Intensive English Program offers an integrated and communicative approach to promoting language proficiency skills.

Classes are prepared with interactive lessons to develop each of the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and the three systems of language (vocabulary, grammar, and usage/idioms). Each level has an expected group of objectives and outcomes that build the basis (i.e. serve as a prerequisite) for the next level’s instruction, thus ensuring a systematic and sequential educational methodology.

US Ling offers the following eight levels of language instruction, each with its corresponding educational objectives.

Levels
Beginners Skill Building – Level 1

This course builds essential speaking patterns, vocabulary, reading and writing skills, and helps with basic cultural orientation. Students learn to form correct speech patterns and write sentences in simple verb forms in affirmative, interrogative, and negative structures, basic nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.

Beginners Skill Building – Level 2

Through an integrated communicative approach to language acquisition, students continue to build their vocabulary and use speech patterns and situational grammar structures in short dialogues and role-plays. When learning grammar, they will focus on progressive verb forms and practice pronunciation patterns, learning to understand and participate in basic casual conversation to survive in the environment of the target language.

Intermediate – Level 3

The integrated approach at the intermediate level further advances students’ understanding and use of English in speaking, grammar, and writing. The intermediate course will gradually increase students’ vocabulary and bridge the gap between knowing the grammar structures and using them in context. At intermediate levels, students will learn to use grammar structures more accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately. The material for the intermediate level covers subject/verb agreement, the use of the perfect form, modals, and clauses. A wide variety of communicative activities will provide opportunities for active language use, enabling students to discuss various topics with one another and to talk to native speakers with ease, understanding them in authentic settings. Writing skills will develop from composing 75-word drafts to 150-word essays within a given time.

High-Intermediate – Level 4

The integrated approach at the intermediate level further advances students’ understanding and use of English in speaking, grammar, writing. The intermediate courses will gradually increase students’ vocabulary and bridge the gap between knowing the grammar structures and using them in context. The material for the intermediate level 4 will review the material covered in level 3 (subject/verb agreement, the use of the perfect forms, modal and idiomatic structures) and focus on clauses. A wide variety of communicative activities will provide opportunities for active language use, enabling students to discuss various topics with one another and talk to native speakers with ease, understanding them in authentic settings. Students will be involved in individual small presentations and learn the basics of research. Writing skills will develop from composing 150-word essays to 200-word essays within 30 minutes. At high intermediate level, students will also focus on creative writing skills and mastering the techniques of free writing.

Advanced - Level 5

Advanced level students are presented with contemporary issues and relevant content based on authentic radio broadcasts and topics of universal interest. The purpose of this level is to have students further develop listening strategies identifying the main ideas and details in the reports and materials of the content-based interviews. As they fine-tune their listening skills, they will add vocabulary, and become familiar with idiomatic language. Students will learn to develop their ideas in a more profound form and debate different points of view. They will gain deeper understanding of American values and culture. When reading a topic, students will learn to integrate it into their writing carefully focusing on sentence structure and overall accuracy. They will develop the necessary skills to outline ideas and organize their position in well-structured 300-word essays, which will include a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.

TOEFL Preparation

This course prepares the culturally diverse students of U.S. Ling Institute to meet the requirements of the newest generation of TOEFL preparation tests (IBT) and to be admitted to US colleges and universities (undergraduate or graduate programs). The content develops all the required skills for the language proficiency test including listening, speaking, and reading sections. Students will also learn skills to help them perform well on the writing section of the TOEFL test. They will learn and practice strategies for writing the independent and integrated essays, perfecting what they already know in organizing and structuring the essays in the necessary formats.
